Manchester United’s bid to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has hit a slight snag today, as Gianluca Di Marzio have reported that the striker may be open to a move to Juventus. The Old Lady is willing to offer a 5 year-deal for the forward, and even though we are long way away from any financial terms being agreed, Cavani has shown interest following a meeting with his brother, who is also his agent.
The Uruguayan has never been able to fulfil his potential in the French capital after his €64 million move from Napoli in 2013. Having been under the shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic for most of his tenure at the club, he has been forced to mostly play out of position. His tally of 28 goals in 60 league games is not bad at all, but it is a far cry from the heights that he can actually reach if played to his strengths.
Cavani made his name at Napoli and was a goalscoring machine for the Italian side. A return to the Serie A, with the champions Juventus, could be a great career move for the striker. The 28 year-old is being courted by several clubs around Europe, including a whole host of Premier League giants.
Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked several times with Cavani over the last year, and with good reason too.
Louis Van Gaal will face the task of bringing in a big-money striker in the summer, after Radamel Falcao’s loan tenure at the club has turned out to be a nightmare. Robin Van Persie is also struggling with injury issues, and looks to be past his prime. This leaves Wayne Rooney as the only real option up front, along with Javier Hernandez if he is re-called from Real Madrid next year. Cavani fits the bill perfectly to be a star at Old Trafford. If the team is built around him, and he is given the right supply, it won’t be too long before he regains his goalscoring touch of old. But, a couple of days ago, PSG chairman Nasser El Khelaifi stated that they would have to pay much more than the €50 million they were planning to pay, in order to have a chance to sign the highly-rated player.
Arsenal could also be on the lookout for a forward, as it is quite apparent that they will not able to challenge for the league with Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck as their main front men. They need a big name, and if Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash, Cavani will certainly be an option for Arsenal.
Juventus though, seem to be confident of landing the PSG man in the summer. Luciano Maggio, the club’s former director, tweeted this earlier today:
— Luciano Moggi (@LUCIANOMOGGI) April 30, 2015
This directly translates to: “Cavani will arrive at Juventus.”
This is one transfer story to keenly follow this summer. With the huge interest surrounding the player, it is highly likely that he will leave PSG. Juventus have emerged as front-runners to sign him, but a move to the Premier League can still not be completely ruled out.
As they say, it’s not over till the fat (or in this case, Old) Lady sings.
