Inter Milan are set to beat Manchester United the race for Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, according to talkSport.
The Cameroon international is set to leave the Camp Nou this summer, after Barcelona reportedly made the former Arsenal star available for £12m.
Song has been linked with a move to English giants Manchester United these last few months, but reports from Milan claim that Inter are willing to match Barcelona’s asking price for the midfielder.
Song has been a bit part player at the Camp Nou since arriving in 2012, but has failed to nail down a starting place in Tata Martino’s side. The former Gunner has fallen down in the pecking order thanks to Xavi, Iniesta and Sergio Busquets; and Song has reportedly decided to pursue his career elsewhere for more playing time.
It is believed that Inter are set to offer the Cameroonian a three-year-deal, worth a reported £80,000 a week, for his services. Walter Mazzarri’s are currently fifth in Serie A and desperately need a holding player in midfield to add balance to their squad.
With Hernanes pulling the strings in the middle of the park, Song’s inclusion in the side would provide solidity for the San Siro outfit. The 26-year-old is a reliable holding midfielder and is equally adept at screening the back four. Mazzarri’s side struggled against Udinese in a goalless stalemate during the week, which left a lot to be desired.
Another Italian side, Napoli had earlier shown an interest in Song, but with manager Rafa Benitez signing Hallas Verona’s Jorginho in the January Transfer window, the way seems clear for rivals Inter to secure the former Arsenal man’s signature.
