The Premier League witnessed yet another exciting weekend of football as Leicester went on top of the table, Liverpool demolished Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium and Jamie Vardy made history with his goalscoring.
Let’s see who made our team of the week.
Goalkeeper: David de Gea [Manchester United]
With Real Madrid losing 0-4 to Barcelona at home, one has to wonder if David de Gea is grateful now that he didn’t make a summer switch. Even though Manchester United finally conceded after 642 minutes, the Spaniard was influential in United’s 2-1 win over Watford.
Right back: Danny Simpson [Leicester City]
The Leicester full-back is enjoying a good season like the rest of his team and was influential in the Foxes 0-3 win over Newcastle at St. James’ Park on both sides of the pitch.
Centre back: Toby Alderweireld [Tottenham Hotspur]
The Belgian has been an astute signing for the Lilywhites. Once again, he played an important part in the side’s win over West Ham and not only kept the aerial threat of Andy Carroll limited, but also got on the scoresheet for Spurs.
Centre back: Martin Skrtel [Liverpool]
The Slovakian capped off a good overall display with a fine goal any attacker would be proud of. It was his weak headed clearance that Aguero latched on to for his goal, but the 30-year-old was solid throughout and ensured City’s lethal forwards can’t do any damage
Left back: Erik Pieters [Stoke City]
The Stoke left-back was solid against Southampton. It was sound defensive performance from the Dutchman where he completed 91% of his passes, made 3 successful tackles and 2 interceptions. He capped it off with a cross from which Bojan scored the solitary goal of the match
Midfielder: Gerard Deulofeu [Everton]
The Spaniard is in brilliant form and ran riot at Goodison park. He might have not got on the scoresheet himself but he caused the Aston Villa defenders all sorts of problems.
Midfielder: Ross Barkley [Everton]
The 21-year-old did get on the scoresheet twice as well as assisted another goal. Another player who seems to be really enjoying himself at the moment.
Midfielder: Philippe Coutinho [Liverpool]
The Brazilian scored his fourth goal against Manchester City (in five games) and combined beautifully with Roberto Firmino, who narrowly missed out on the team of the week). This is his fourth goal in three games.
Forward: Jamie Vardy [Leicester City]
Who would have thought some time back that Vardy would become the first English player to score ten consecutive Premier League goals? The Leicester star ensured he equalled Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record against Newcastle United.
Forward: Harry Kane [Tottenham Hotspur]
The England international couldn’t seem to get going at the start of the season but he can’t stop scoring now. He got on the scoresheet twice to make it 7 goals in the last 4 league games.
Forward: Romelu Lukaku [Everton]
With two goals, the Belgian joined the illustrious company of players like Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler, who have scored 50 Premier League goals under the age of 23.
