Liverpool are eyeing a move for Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker in the summer according to reports in the British Media. Caulker joined Cardiff from Tottenham last summer in a £9m move to Wales but with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looking to go down, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants to being the 22 year to Anfield in the summer.
The duo worked together at Swansea when Caulker spent a season long loan at Swansea and Rodgers believes that the youngster will bring added competition in his side’s back four. Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Mamadou Sakho have enough experience at the heart of the defense but with Liverpool now in the Champions League next season, squad depth will be vital for the Reds.
Tottenham have the first option of resigning the defender but with a new manager taking charge at White Hart lane imminent, Liverpool are in pole position to get Caulker at Merseyside.
Elsewhere, Arsenal have joined Tottenham in the race for signing Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck in the summer. The English International has cut a frustrated figure at old Trafford by the lack of opportunities and is desperate to ply his trade elsewhere to get more game time on the pitch.
The 23 year old is a sale able asset to recoup a significant amount of cash and with United trying to bring in Edinson Cavani in the summer, Welbeck would fall further down in the pecking order.
Arsene Wenger is desperate to bring in reinforcements to strengthen his attack and has targeted Welbeck as the most feasible option. The young striker has two years remaining on his current contract but would be more than willing for a switch to express himself more on the pitch. United would however want £20m for the Englishman.
