Jack Wilshere has revealed that his England ambitions were the reason behind why he opted to join West Ham this summer.
Wilshere has struggled with injuries throughout the years which have halted his progress as a player.
Once touted as the future of English football, he has sadly not lived up to expectations.
Wilshere left his boyhood club, Arsenal at the end of last season after he did not receive assurances from new boss Unai Emery over whether he would receive regular first-team football.
Though he managed to work his way back into the Arsenal first-team towards the second-half of last season, he struggled to find consistency.
He ultimately paid the price as he was left out of the England squad which placed fourth during the World Cup in Russia.
Wilshere is almost certain to receive playing time with the Hammers when fit and he is hoping to use the opportunities to convince Gareth Southgate to call him up for national team duty.
He told the Evening Standard: “If I am playing well for West Ham week in, week out, I do not see why I should not be in the England squad. Gareth made it clear before the tournament that anyone can get selected as long as you are playing well and week in, week out.
“That is probably another reason why I wanted to stay in England and wanted to be playing in front of the England manager, and be in the fans’ minds.”
