For the first time in 30 years the neutrals’ favourite club Borussia Dortmund will occupy the Bundesliga relegation zone after a woeful start to the season. Naturally this has led to rumours on the future of their star players including World Cup winner Mats Hummels.

Hummels branded Dortmund’s shambolic 2-1 loss against bottom of the table Werder Bremen as “pathetic” which has fuelled speculation he could be set to quit the German club with Manchester United heavily linked with the centre-half. Louis Van Gaal has hinted he is keen to strengthen his threadbare defence with more experience after an injury ravaged first half of the season.

Desperately short of defenders, another possible destination for the Dortmund captain could be Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger stating a move for a centre-half is possible if he can find the right player. Regarded as one of Europe’s top defenders and having already partnered Per Mertesacker with the national team he seems the ideal candidate. With money in the bank and their season hardly going to plan the pressure is to spend big in January, so the likely £40m fee shouldn’t be a problem for the London club.

The other superstar possibly on his way out of the club is Marco Reus, and his destination could already be decided. Despite missing the World Cup and most of the season through injury The Daily Express report he could be on his way to the Bernabeu this summer in a £20m move on a five-year contract. This acts as a major blow to United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich who were all understandably interested in the talented forward.

German paper BILD reported several weeks ago that Reus had been taking Spanish lessons so his destination might not be that much of a surprise, but might come as a blow to fellow Spanish giants Barcelona, after it was rumoured that Reus supported the Catalan club and would snub the ‘Galacticos’ in their favour.
