According to German newspaper Die Welt, Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic is set to leave the Bundesliga Champions for a shock return to his former club Wolfsburg in the summer.
The report claims that Mandzukic’s advisors and Wolfsburg’s representatives are already in advance negotiations for the player who is now set to make the switch after the World Cup in Brazil.
The final details of the deal for the Croat is yet to be known but according to Bayern, the striker’s evaluation stands at €30m. However the newspaper report says that Mandzukic will earn an annual salary of €8m which according to Wolfsburg is the ‘best package’ for the player.
This would be a massive transfer blow to Arsenal as the Gunners have been linked with the 28 year old for the past few months ever since it was confirmed that Robert Lewandowski would join Bayern from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
Persisting problems with manager Pep Guardiola too remains another key aspect on why Mandzukic sees his future away from the club as the striker believes that he doesn’t fit into Guardiola’s system for the Bavarian outfit. He had a stunning 2013-14 season despite his future remaining unclear, scoring 21 goals and grabbing 6 assists in 41 appearances.
Mandzukic missed out on Croatia’s opening day loss to Brazil in the World Cup but the striker was in red hot form as Niko Kovac’s side demolished Cameroon by 4-0 in their second encounter in the showpiece event. Croatia now face a must win game against Mexico in their last group encounter to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
