Gonzalo Higuain looks finally set to join Arsenal, after his parent club Real Madrid granted the player and his father-cum-agent, Jorge Higuain, the permission to further the negotiations with Arsenal.
The Argentine will now fly to London to complete his £23 million switch, with the Gunners are thought to have offered him a three year contract worth up to £100,000 per week, reports The Guardian.
Higuain admitted at the end of last season that he would be willing to sever all ties with Madrid this summer, which consequently drew attentions of several European heavyweights, including Arsenal and Italian giants Juventus.
The Serie A champions initially showed great interest in signing him, but backed off from negotiations after Madrid slapped a £25 million price-tag on the player’s head. Instead, they moved swiftly to land Higuain’s compatriot, Carlos Tevez, clearing the path for Arsenal to snap up the deal for the 25-year-old.
Higuain could be a massive signing for the Gunners. Yes, massive. Not only he would add goals and substantial sharpness to the side but could be the man to replenish the void left by Robin van Persie.
Arsenal, who initially felt confident about finding a way to nullify the void left by the Dutchman last season, by landing two forwards in the summer, were left red faced following a mediocre season from the attacking recruits. Neither Lukas Podolski nor Olivier Giroud made any real impact, leaving Wenger to delve into transfer market once again, to try and find an answer to the conundrum.
Whether Wenger’s pawn manages to replicate the success of Van Persie is yet to be seen, it is however a fact that he has found himself a real diamond, a proven goal scorer. Higuain, who has scored 107 goals in 190 games in over six and a half seasons, since joining the Los Blancos as a 19-year-old has goals written all over him, provided the right support from his team mates.
If Arsenal can hold on to their creative forces such as Jack Wilshere and Sati Cazorla, fit for the entire season and bring in the necessary reinforcements, especially in the defensive positions, there’s no reason why they can’t challenge for the title.
Signings like these not only lift the morale of the dressing room but injects high dose of belief into the fans that the club is now ready to stand toe-to-toe with their rivals and compete for honours.
By joining Manchester United in the summer, Van Persie has forever booked the role of a draconian devil in the eyes of the Gunners. Higuain, on the other hand, has been presented with the chance to be their new idol and hero, and who knows, this time next year we may hear the chant – Robin Who?
