Manchester United legend Gary Neville says Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez would have been the perfect replacement for Luis Suarez at Liverpool.
The former Ajax man left the Merseyside club after the 2014 FIFA World Cup and completed a switch to Barcelona earlier in July. Before he left Anfield, the Reds were negotiating to sign Sanchez as a part of the swap deal.
However, the Chilean international rejected a chance to join Brendan Rodgers’ side and joined Arsenal in the summer. The former United defenders believe Sanchez’s addition to Liverpool’s squad would have seen them avoid the struggle this season.
“[Sanchez] would have been an ideal replacement for Luis Suarez. Goals, tenacity, pressing from the front, loses the ball – it goes past him he runs back,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“Everything Liverpool would have wanted to replace Suarez, obviously you could argue he wouldn’t score the goals Suarez would score, but I think he would have been the perfect replacement for Suarez. It’s a real shame for Liverpool they didn’t get him, but a massive plus for Arsenal.”
Suarez was the top scorer in the league last season. Rodgers signed Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli and the duo have struggled to shine in the attacking division. Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge is also on the sidelines with injury, which has further added to Liverpool’s worries.
Sanchez, on the other hand, has already scored 12 goals in all competitions for Arsene Wenger’s side since leaving Barcelona and joining Arsenal.
