One of the major highlights of the summer transfer window was Everton’s bold refusal to accept big money offers from Premier League Champions Chelsea for defender John Stones. The Blues have had three bids rejected for Stones, and their failure to sign the England international was seen as a major disappointment.
Everton though have added Ramiro Funes Mori to bolster their defence before the deadline day. The 24-year-old defender has revealed he nearly joined Chelsea a few years ago, but the deal didn’t go through due to work permit issues.
Mori, who completed his £9.7m summer move to Everton from River Plater on the deadline day, made his debut against Chelsea during Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Champions.
Before completing his move to Everton, Mori and his brother, Rogelio (plays for Mexican club Monterry) had a trial with Chelsea.
The defender told Daily Express, via ESPN: “It can be said that it’s my second spell at England — I had a trial for Chelsea a few years ago alongside with my twin brother.
“We stayed at Chelsea for two weeks but had to leave because we didn’t have an European passport.
“Well, I still don’t have a European passport but Everton truly wanted me. So now I hope to be ready and get used to playing in the Premier League as soon as possible.”
Moving to other reports, according to reports from the British press, Real Madrid could join the race to sign Everton defender John Stones, should Rapahel Varane moves to Manchester United.
It is indeed a hypothetical situation, and involves too many ‘ifs’ here. We can safely say, that’s not how a transfer market works!
