January is not the ideal time for carrying out transfers. Big clubs usually do not want to sell their top players in the middle of the season. The market tends to get inflated around this time and signing players on a bargain deal becomes difficult.

In recent years, Premier League clubs have bucked the trend by being fairly active during the January transfer window. Several big money signings – Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Juan Cuadrado, Juan Mata et al – have taken place in the January transfer window in recent years which shows Premier League clubs are not afraid of dishing out money if the player is available.

What about the upcoming January transfer window? What are the odds on the latest transfers that are likely to happen in January? Chelsea will definitely be looking to add one or two players to their squad. Likewise, Manchester United could sign a striker with skipper Wayne Rooney failing miserably upfront.

Here we take a look at five players who could make a move (we’re talking about realistic targets & not Pogba or Cavani) to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

Alex Teixeira – Chelsea have kept a close eye on the Brazilian forward, who has scored goals for fun in the Ukrainian Premier league this season. Shakhtar Donetsk are demanding a fee in the region of £30m for him, and the Blues are reportedly ready to meet their demands.

Jonathan Calleri – Another player who might join Chelsea in the January window is the Argentine striker Calleri. The Blues have reportedly started negotiating with Boca Juniors over the transfer. Calleri could be sent on loan to Boca for the rest of the season, should the deal go through.

Neven Subotic – Liverpool could be looking to sign a defender in January, following a knee injury to Mamadou Sakho. Reports in Germany suggest, Liverpool will be looking to sign Subotic from Borussia Dortmund next month. Subotic has struggled to get regular games this season at Dortmund and a reunion with his former boss is a high possibility.

Grzegorz Krychowiak – The Polish midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the past few months. With both Coquelin and Arteta injured, and William Carvalho or Lars Bender unlikely to leave in January, Arsenal could make a move for the 24-year-old midfielder who would cost around €30m.

Alexandre Pato – The former AC Milan striker has admitted recently that he wants to play in big European clubs again. A host of Premier League clubs are seemingly interested in him including Liverpool, Tottenham and even Manchester United (Pato rejected offers from United in the summer transfer window), but Arsenal would be an ideal club for the Brazilian. Also, United can tempt him again with a better offer, although the Red Devils have other targets in mind.
