We had reported earlier this week that Swiss defender and Arsenal target Fabian Schar said in an interview that he ‘dreams of playing’ in the Premier League. The 22 year old FC Basel defender has been a long term target of the Gunners and reports from the Italian Media claim that he might just be a step away from joining the Gunners in the upcoming January transfer window.
TMW have also reported late last night that the Emirates outfit are willing to pay €10m for Schar as they look to plug their defensive problems in the upcoming winter transfer window. Schar who is out of contract with Basel in the summer has also attracted the interest from Italian giants Lazio and Inter Milan. However, both the clubs are clearly aware of Arsenal’s interest and are resigned to fact of losing out.
Moreover, the player being an Arsenal fan also makes the job a bit easier for Arsene Wenger who can sign sign the youngster for a cut price deal. Wenger had earlier stated that he would need to reinforce his defense in the next transfer window and recent developments clearly hint that things are falling into place.
Schar would be a long term prospect but he can easily fit into the current Arsenal side. The Swiss star being primarily a centre back can play at right back. With Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny being the first choice centre backs, Arsenal do not have sufficient cover in the heart of the defense. Thus it would be Arsenal’s choice to pursue their interest or let go a future star in the making.
