It’s now officially over. The issue that has gripped the Spanish nation for the past few weeks has come to an end. El Clásico has finally been given a date and kick off time – Monday 29 November at 9pm.

The matter had been the subject of intense debate over the whole of the peninsula, with newspaper polls and even TV shows trying to unravel the mystery of when it would actually take place. The reason the decision has taken so long is that the game at the Camp Nou coincides with the weekend of the Catalan elections.

Jaume Roures – owner of television company Mediapro, which has the rights to the game – said: “We had to take the civic point of view into account, which was a crucial aspect. It was very important the game didn’t overlap with the elections. Our main aim was to play it on either Sunday or Monday, so it didn’t inconvenience anybody. It’s almost like a Champions League semi-final now”he joked.

Not everybody is happy with the decision, least of all the security forces as they will have to contend with two massive events on the same weekend. Real Madrid are not happy with the decision either judging by the reaction of their fans. Some of them even think the date of the elections should be changed.

I'm an Englishman from Manchester living in Spain and have supported Málaga for the past 20 years. I run coaches to all Málaga home games, write and produce a fanzine, and have recently had a book published entitled 'Málaga Football Club - The Story' - it's the only book (in English or Spanish) that covers the entire history of the club. I am also a Manchester City fan from birth.
