Argentina team director Carlos Bilardo has refused to close the door on the possible return of Diego Maradona as head coach.
Maradona, considered a legend across his home country, hasn’t had his contract renewed by the AFA as yet. The decision has come as a surprise to many, with the national side previously being stated one of the favorites for world domination in South Africa, but eventually fell to an impressive German side during the quarter finals. However Bilardo, speaking on Todo Noticias, has said that no doors will be closed until a new coach is officially appointed:
“If Diego comes and talks, I don’t know what can happen. It’s all a question of talking. I would not close any door. We are awaiting the outcome. Anything can happen.
“My job is to suggest people who can work and then the executive committee are those who decide. But we still have not talked with anyone or come up with anyone’s names. The possibility of another meeting exists.”
So will Maradona make his way back to his previous position? Or will he choose to search for a new job, possibly in Europe? There’s likely to be interest across the world, and we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Premier League within the next few years.
