Does Arsene Wenger owe the fans this summer?

With the news former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, currently a free agent, is training with the London side this summer with a view to signing a contract, does manager Arsene Wenger owe the supporters more?

After having endured season after season of losing their top performers to a number of European giants, Wenger pleased with the fans for patience, and promised them better times.

True to their word, the majority of fans have stuck by the French manager through thick and thin in recent years, but their patience has still yet to be acknowledged and rewarded.

They’ve been waiting for a long time to finally see large investment made following the high-profile and lucrative departures of their former stars, but this summer they have been misled by the club about promised big-name signings coming to the Emirates. They deserve answers.

Arsenal have been linked with a number of potential signings, but have being outbid or snubbed leaving them with just one new face from last season – ex-Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo.

The Gunners most recently made a £10M bid to sign Newcastle’s deep-lying playmaker Yohan Cabaye, but were told to up their bid by manager Alan Pardew.

Questions are being asked why Arsenal aren’t just paying the asking price Newcastle have privately stated instead of haggling over a few million pounds.

While Flamini is a good player when fit, he’s doesn’t come close to Cabaye on the football field, so is Wenger lacking ambition in the market?

Let alone the side having taken so long to sign nobody, there are only 10 days left of the transfer window. Last season, the side were guilty of making panic buys on deadline day. Some of the signings fit in and are now a regular fixture, others were sold or released this summer.

This summer was a time where Arsenal weren’t going to lose any players of their own will to bigger clubs, and a time where they would heavily invest as a result – using the money of the previously sold Cesc Fabregas left, Samir Nasri centre, Alex Song, Robin Van Persie right etc.

No spending has been made and fans are disillusioned of their chances this season. They feel they aren’t improving, and feel they deserve better from Wenger after 8 years of underachievement and no trophies.
