Do Arsenal really need £15m Tottenham target?

Soccerlens writer Tamojit covered a report yesterday that Arsenal are preparing a move for Roma’s unwanted striker Mattia Destro. Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport claims that Mattia Destro’s agent will fly to London within a day or two to hold talks with Arsenal over a possible transfer move.

Popular journalist Tancredi Palmeri also confirmed that GDS’s claims are fairly true. Arsenal’s cross town rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also in the hunt, and reports from The Times suggest, Spurs are ready to swap deal for Destro, with Roberto Soldado going the other way.

Destro is a good striker but he has struggled to get regular games for Roma this season. He will be a good addition for Arsenal, no doubt, but one cannot help but think – is he really needed at the club?

Arsenal have enough attacking depth up front. The current squad have Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck as main strikers, while Alexis Sanchez can play upfront if needed.

Destro is not a big upgrade on the current bunch of strikers Arsenal have. So what’s the point in having a striker when you’ve plenty at disposal? The logic could have hold had Arsenal made a move for someone like Edinson Cavani or Karim Benzema – with whom one can definitely say they will improve the first team. Same cannot be said about Destro.

But most importantly, signing a striker is not Arsenal’s biggest headache at the moment. Wenger’s immediate priority lies in buying a defender and a world class central midfielder.

Arsenal will need to pay a handsome fee (£15m as per transfermarket.com) for Destro, as I don’t think Roma will be too interested in selling him on loan.

What you think Arsenal fans? Should the Gunners sign Destro in January?
