Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo feels he is having “the best season of my career” but believes the Ballon d’Or award will go to Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign for Real Madrid during the 2014/15 season, where he scored 61 goals for Los Blancos, three more than Messi, and became the first player in Spanish football history to reach the 50-goal-mark in five consecutive seasons.
However, the winner of the Ballon d’Or award is also judged on the team’s success as well, and this is where Barcelona’s Messi can pip Ronaldo for the biggest individual prize in world football.
Messi was equally outstanding Barcelona and inspired his side to a historic treble winning the Spanish League, Cup and the Champions League, while their arch-rivals Real Madrid finished empty handed.
Ronaldo was a guest on The Jonathan Ross Show, where he said, as quoted by the Guardian:
To be honest I think Messi is going to win this year because this kind of trophy, it depends on votes. You win competitions, you win the Champions League you win the league in terms of individual. I did probably the best season of my career which is good and I was the highest scorer in Europe [but] it’s all about votes, it’s difficult and to be honest I’m not very worried about that because as I said many times, I never thought I’d win three times to be honest.
Although Ronaldo has played down his chances, but it is really tough to see him not winning the Ballon d’Or again.
Messi has hardly played this season through injury and the Argentine needs to finish the season on a high to wow the voters.
On the other hand, Ronaldo, despite him not playing at his best under Rafael Benitez, has scored 18 goals this year in all competitions already.
