Manchester United’s hope of signing Neymar has been dashed after Barcelona technical director Roberto Fernandez claims the star forward will be at the club “for life.”

Having joined the Catalan club from Santos in 2013, he signed a five year deal and has a €190m release clause in his contract, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deprotivo. The same report that was published on October 6 suggests the talks over new contract have stalled.

The Brazil international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, as reported by the Independent. However, the treble winners were successful in keeping Neymar at the club.

Fernandez has come out in public and in an interview with Spanish publication Marca revealed Neymar’s contract extension will not be a problem for Barcelona.

“We’re working on Neymar’s new contract and I don’t think there’ll be any problems whatsoever. I have no doubt that Neymar will spend the rest of his career at Barcelona,” Fernandez said.

Earlier in September, the South American attacker admitted he held talks with the Premier League giants in the summer.

“We had conversations, but there was nothing concrete. I heard that there were offers but none were made to me,” Neymar told ESPN Brazil.

Fernandez’s comments regarding the forward’s contract extension will come as a relief for Barcelona fans, while at the same time a blow for United and their supporters in securing Neymar’s signature.

Should Neymar continue at Barcelona?

The 23-year-old is one of the big name players in football and is considered as the star player in Brazil. He is the main man for the South American nation, but can never achieve the same at Barcelona.

He will also be second behind Lionel Messi at the club. The Argentine international is the main man for the La Liga giants and is the highest paid player at Camp Nou. It will be a difficult task for Neymar to overcome the four-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner.

A move away from the club will allow him to become the main man and should he make a switch to United, he has the perfect opportunity to become the star player at Old Trafford. Neymar can achieve the same position at Barcelona only one Messi leaves the club. Will he wait for the Argentine to leave or will he find another club before that? That is the question which can be answered by Neymar alone.
