It’s not too often that Jose Mourinho gets something wrong in the transfer market, but on this occasion, it’s only taken him six months to realise that he has.
Juan Cuadrado only moved to Chelsea in February, but after an uneventful time at Stamford Bridge, it looks like Mourinho is already ready to discard the Colombian. According to reliable Spanish daily Sport, Chelsea are looking to find possible buyers for Cuadrado, with Barcelona being one of the names mentioned. But, after being in the market for him last summer, the Catalans have rejected the idea of bringing him to the Camp Nou a year later.
A return to the Serie A could also be on the cards, with Inter Milan and Juventus both reportedly ready to take a gamble.
Cuadrado has made 14 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea but has failed to score a single goal. It wasn’t long before fans were left wondering why the club sold Andre Schurrle before spending €35 million to bring in Cuadrado from Fiorentina.
Last summer, after the winger impressed at the World Cup in Brazil, a whole host of top European clubs were vying for his signature. Among them were the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United, and so it was considered a real coup for Chelsea when they ghosted in out of nowhere to secure his services. But, just like many players in the past, Cuadrado found it difficult to adapt to life in the Premier League and delivered some thoroughly unconvincing performances.
Mourinho wants to sell the 27 year-old before his value falls any further in the market. If he manages to find a buyer now, a large portion of the €35 million will be recovered, but if Cuadrado has another disastrous season, his price tag will shoot downwards.
The Blues could see some major transfer activity in the next month, with reports also suggesting that Mourinho would be willing to sell midfielder Oscar for the right price. That would, of course, leave room for new additions in the attacking midfield position, with names like Antoine Griezmann mentioned.
