Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged Chelsea to sign Aston Villa star striker Christian Benteke in the summer transfer window.
The Belgium international has been in superb form in this calendar year and has scored 13 goals in 29 league appearances this season. His recent display has attracted interest from top clubs in the Premier League.
The Sunday Times reported that Liverpool are set to sign Benteke in a £30m deal. The Merseyside club have been short of goals in the recently concluded campaign, which saw them finish sixth in the table.
Chelsea’s veteran striker Didier Drogba has already confirmed he will leave Stamford Bridge in the summer. Merson has advised Jose Mourinho to hijack the Reds’ deal in landing the goal-scoring machine and allow Blues striker Loic Remy leave the club in the upcoming transfer window.
“Benteke ticks all the boxes. That is the one position they definitely need, especially with Drogba going,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“I don’t think Remy is that good. If you played Remy for 10 games I don’t think they would win the league.
“I think the way Benteke plays he could come in for Costa like-for-like. Does he not go there because he won’t play?” he concluded.
The former Real Madrid manager will be looking to sign a striker in the summer transfer window, especially that Drogba revealing his decision to leave Chelsea. Apart from Remy, Mourinho has Diego Costa as the other striker in the squad.
The Brazil-born Spain international had an impressive start to his debut season. but has struggled with injuries. The Premier League champions will be in the market for a striker and a move for Benteke will see them bolster their strike force.
However, a move for Villa star will see Liverpool suffer a massive blow in their bid to land the striker.
