Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski is primed to leave the club in the summer, with a move back to Germany the likeliest possibility. The 28-year-old has suffered through a hit-and-miss career with the Gunners up til now, but Borussia Dortmund are said to be eager to bring him back to the Bundesliga.
Podolski has scored five times in his last five games, having been recently reintroduced to the Arsenal starting XI, but it still seems a distinct possibility that the attacker will be packing his bags at the end of the season.
His words last week highlighted his preference for a move back to his native Germany, with FC Cologne ‘more than a club’ for the striker, as he told transfermarkt.de:
“The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world, and thus always interesting,” Podolski said,
“When I think of the Bundesliga, I naturally first of all think of the FC [Cologne]. That’s much more than just a club for me, that’s home. Maybe I’ll play for the Billygoats again, that is always an option and a matter of heart.”
Despite his strong connections to his first ever club side, their Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund are hoping to lure Podolski to the Westfalenstadion this summer.
Rumours from the British media, caught up by TMW, claim that last year’s Champions League runners-up are ready to bid for the 28-year-old, who has still two years left to run on his current Arsenal contract.
Still, the ongoing speculation hasn’t fazed the former Bayern striker it seems, with Podolski happily fooling around in training yesterday.
The Gunners are set to host Newcastle at the Emirates on Monday evening, with Arsene Wenger’s side able to open up a four point lead over fifth-placed Everton with a win.
