Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to sign a new contract at the club, ending all speculation about his future. However, instead of signing a three-year deal, which he has traditionally signed at the club, the Frenchman is set to be handed only two more years.
According to The Times, an outline agreement has been reached on a two-year-deal, which Wenger is expected to sign at the end of the season.
Initially Wenger was offered a three-year contract when negotiation began last year, but as it stands, the Frenchman will commit his future to two years instead.
The report cleaims that despite Arsenal’s 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea in the Premier League, which raised doubts over his future in North London, the club’s belief in their long-serving manager remains unwavering and there is no such requirement to win the FA Cup or finish in the top four of the Premier League to trigger the new deal.
The club expects Wenger to sign the new deal at the end of the season, and the situation would change only if he walks away from the job, which is highly unlikely.
Wenger is confident of staying in the title challenge and remains upbeat about building a team for the future, but the two-year-contract suggests that Arsenal might have a plan for the future without him.
Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp is thought be one of the candidates to replace him, while reports suggests that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and Everton boss Roberto Martinez have also been added to the list of options.
