Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal’s latest signing Calum Chambers signing was a gamble.
The 19-year-old English footballer completed his £16m switch from Southampton to the Emirates on Monday. He is a versatile player who can play as right-back, central defender and a midfielder.
Wenger remains hopeful that he can field Chambers in multiple position and has backed the former Southampton star to be a player for the future.
“He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions,” Wenger told Sky Sports.
“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”
At right-back, the Gunners have signed Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle earlier this summer. Meanwhile, in centre-back Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen as the first choice centre-backs at the Emirates.
However, the Belgium international’s future at Arsenal remains uncertain and shouled be decide to leave his current employers, Wenger can deploy Chambers in that position.
