Arsene Wenger has taken a swipe at Jose Mourinho after the latter’s comments claims that clubs should be deducted points for failing to meet Financial Fair Play rules. Mourinho had earlier blamed reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City after the Etihad side signed Wilfried Bony for £28m from Swansea in the Januray Transfer window despite being hit with FFP regulations last summer.
Wenger however cited Chelsea’s whopping £75m spending spree in January 2011 when the Blues signed Fernando Torres and David Luiz n blockbuster deals. The Arsenal manager accused the Stamford Bridge side of “financial doping” and their own failure to comply with FFP regulations.
Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph writes that when Wenger was asked what he thought about Mourinho’s claim that clubs should be deducted points for failing to comply with FFP rules, the Frenchman smiled and replied: “I think we have a good sense of humour here.”
Wenger believes that a lack of clarity in the FFP has created loopholes for clubs to exploit, “Look, the financial fair play rules have to be respected by everybody and if one club respected always the financial fair play, and you can underline always, it’s Arsenal, then we do not have to talk about that.”
“It depends what you call financial fair play, as that notion has changed you know. Is it is just your income created by the gates? Is it the gates and commercial? Then you can already start to be creative.”
Arsenal host bottom placed Leicester City on Tuesday night at the Emirates after being beaten by Tottenham in the North London derby earlier in the weekend.
