Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal will not spend big in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners were linked with a big money move for Juventus star Arturo Vidal, who is valued around €40m by the Italian club. The Chilean international has also been attracting interest from their league rivals Manchester United.
The North London club were linked with a several world class players. Porto striker Jackson Martinez, Real Madrid star Karim Benzema are few to be named, who were all rumoured to be Arsenal’s potential summer targets.
The Emirates club won the FA Cup after defeating Aston Villa 4-0 in the final on last Saturday. After retaining the cup, Wenger has cooled all speculations linking big money move to Arsenal.
“We would not get involved at that level for financial reasons. People forget that for years we had to sell our best players and that was a very difficult period. That is the reality,” Sky Sports reported Wenger as saying.
“Since we are buying again, we are slowly coming back to a more competitive level. You speak maybe about stratospheric numbers where we will not be involved.
“Santi Cazorla was voted man of the match in the (FA Cup) final. I think he has not cost £150m. (Francis) Coquelin was one of the best players on the pitch. You have to always look at the real quality of people.
“I am not against spending money, I have shown that recently. But I want a good rapport between price and quality. I’m always more focused on quality,” he said.
Arsenal have been in fine form during this calendar year and that helped them finish third in the league table – above United – and also win the FA Cup. Wenger believes the current set of players at the club are capable of challenging Chelsea for the title as he claims his men are mentally stronger.
“Mentally, we are stronger. I think we have seen that since January. We have made progress on the mental side and on mastering our games and on being less naive and better balanced and knowing what to do. It is intelligence,” Wenger added.
Arsenal manager’s comments may come as a disappointment for their fans, if they were expecting their club to spend big on world class players. Wenger already admitted that United have already approached the player the Gunners are looking to sign.
With Wenger saying he will not splash the cash, it will further boost United in signing players, who is also wanted by Arsenal.
