Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly a top target of the Japanese FA to take over the national team according to The Daily Mail.

The 68-year-old Wenger stepped down as manager of Arsenal at the end of last season, following 22-years in charge.

While he had one year remaining on his deal at the Emirates, he was subjected to intense criticism during recent years due to the Gunners inconsistent results and this ultimately led to his decision to vacate his position.

Prior to taking over Arsenal in 1996, Wenger had managed Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan.

He still has a positive reputation in Japan and the Japanese FA have now made it a priority to re-hire him to take over the national team.

Japan are a modest football nation and their national team was eliminated during the round of 16 by Belgium during the 2018 World Cup.

They led Belgium 2-0 at one point during the game but a second half collapse meant that the Belgians went on to win the encounter 3-2.
