Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the Gunners will make signing in January, if the right opportunity presents itself.
The north London club need to strengthen their defence and also holding midfield position in order to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season. They now sit fifth in the league table with 33 points from 19 games, three behind third place Manchester United.
“There is a need there but the right opportunity has to come up. To buy [just] to buy is not what we want to do, but if the right opportunity comes up, we will do it,” Wenger told in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
“If you look at the number of games some players played, and the injuries we have with Wilshere, Ramsey and Arteta, we are a bit short at the moment in midfield.”
Arsenal visit St Mary’s Stadium as they take on Southampton in the Premier League clash on New Year’s Day. The Frenchman is aware of the threat possessed by the Saints, who recently ended their home match against Chelsea in a 1-1 draw.
Laurent Koscielny returned to the side against West Ham United as the French international was partnering Per Mertesacker in the heart of the Gunners’ back four. Wenger has heaped praise on his compatriot and is hopeful, he along with the World Cup winning defender can help Arsenal bounce back.
“His individual quality is huge, he is a top-class defender. On top of that he has a lot of experience together with Per Mertesacker and you could feel that in the game against West Ham,” Arsenal manager said.
“They understand each other well, they understand each other’s movements and they cover each other very well.
“You judge a defence more as a back four. We want to show have big targets in front of us now and that our back four can deal with the problems we have. In some games we were a bit exposed because we had a lack of experience.”
