With less than four days remaining for the summer transfer window to slam shut, it has become now or never for Arsenal. The Gunners have yet to make any significant additions to the squad other than the free signings of Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini, with the reported £70 million budget, still burning a hole in the pocket.
The Gunners were linked with a move to several Real Madrid players in the summer and according to Daily Mail, Arsene Wenger is looking to use all of his transfer money on Madrid trio Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria, as the Gunners look to end the summer window on a high.
But really, who are they kidding? The three players have stated publicly that they don’t want to leave the club this summer and their position doesn’t seem in too danger, should Gareth Bale arrive at the Bernabeu. It has been reported that Madrid could look to listen to offers for the trio, but it is highly ludicrous to think they would sell three world class players as a package offer.
It has been reported that Benzema is the first priority of Wenger this summer, but it seems highly unlikely that the France international would swap colours, especially now that he remains the central striker of the side, following the departure of Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli.
Probably, Di Maria could be available, if the Los Blancos feel he is surplus to requirements. They could dispense with his services to raise money to fund their record move for Gareth Bale, but, finding a deal for either of Ozil and Benzema is almost out of question.
Arsenal desperately need reinforcement this summer and their thin squad will be stretched now, especially with the injuries of so many star players like Mikel Arteta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski, who was ruled out only yesterday for up to 10 weeks with a hamstring injury.
Further, the Gunners were drawn in a Group of Death in the Champions League along with Borussia Dortmund, Marseille and Napoli and getting out of group stage could become tough if immediate surgeries are not done.
Benzema, Ozil and Di Maria all would be terrific signings for any club, but getting all three of them for £70 million or either of the two is unrealistic at this stage, especially for a club that hasn’t seen the face of a trophy for nearly a decade. Time is running out for Wenger and it may well happen that the money remains unused altogether. Last thing Arsenal fans need is another false dawn.
