Arsenal are looking to re-sign their former player Alex Song from Barcelona before the ongoing transfer window closes on September 1.
The Cameroon international’s future at Nou Camp remains uncertain and will be offloaded before the window shuts early next week. His situation was alerted to the Premier League clubs as we reported earlier that Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in signing the midfielder.
Barcelona have signed Douglas Pereira and the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims that the Catalan club’s manager Luis Enrique wants to offload Song.
Arsene Wenger has the services of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini as the recognised holding midfielders in the squad. However, the former Everton man picked up an injury during the Gunners’ first leg Champions League play-off clash against Besiktas in Istanbul.
Injury to Arteta saw Wenger confirm that Arsenal could sign a midfielder in the final week of the transfer window.
When asked to Wenger about the possibility of signing a midfielder after Arteta’s injury, The Telegraph quoted the Frenchman as saying, “We are not against that, no.”
“We are like you, we listen to the names, sometimes I look who we buy in the media but at the moment as I told you we are not in an emergency case.”
“We have the players we want but we are open as well to any opportunity until the end of the transfer window, who can strengthen our defensive department in quality and number,” Arsenal manager added.
Arsenal would be considering a move in bringing Song back to the Emirates. However, the North London club could face competition from Brendan Rodgers’ side, who have long maintained their interest in signing the former Premier League midfielder.
It is very unlikely that Song will have any part to play if he continues at Barcelona beyond this transfer window, especially when the La Liga giants have strengthened in this window.
It should be seen as to where Song will end up. Arsenal are in pole position, but could face competition from Liverpool for the midfielder’s signature.
