Arsenal are preparing a summer bid for Borussia Dortmund’s world class winger (widely perceived) Marco Reus as a possible replacement of Theo Walcott.
The Telegraph reports that the Gunners remain interested in signing the German winger as Arsene Wenger is keen to bolster the attacking midfield department.
Although Wenger’s main priority lies in bolstering the central midfield and central defence, the Frenchman is also looking to add more craft in the attacking midfield area.
Arsenal have an avalanche of attacking midfielders – Ramsey, Ozil, Oxlade Chamberlain, Cazorla, Sanchez et al – at their disposal, and Reus can only bring more quality to the side. He can play in three attacking positions in Wenger’s usual 4-2-3-1 system and his penchant for regularly scoring goals is something Wenger should be seriously looking at while making the decision.
The report also suggest that Premier League rivals Chelsea are also interested in Reus, while Manchester United have had been linked with the player before.
The 25-year-old recently signed a contract extension at BVB until 2019 that removes his release clause.
His previous contract contained a release clause that could have been activated for 25 million euros only.
Reus wrote on Facebook after signing the new contract: “I am very much looking forward to the future at BVB with our outstanding fans backing us. My heart has decided. Let’s get it started. We want to achieve a lot of things. Not only this season.”
The winger also hinted that he wants to continue with Dortmund for a longer period of time. He said in an interview:
“When I signed for Dortmund, I said that I want to achieve great things with the club. I have the feeling that it’s not over yet, especially given our difficult situation right now.
“I stand by my words. You win and you lose together. It’s also a decision for life. That’s why it took me so long to decide.”
In any case, if Arsenal or Chelsea want to put in a bid for Reus, they have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for his signature. It is well obvious now that Dortmund have the upper hand in the bidding war.
Arsenal winger Theo Walcott gave a statement on Twitter where he clarified that he wasn’t involved in any bust-up with his manager, but at the same time also revealed that he hasn’t been in talks over signing any new contract with the Gunners.
