According to several reports in Spain and England, Arsenal sent scouts to watch Sevilla midfielder, Grzegorz Krychowiak earlier this season and were close to making a formal offer for the Polish defensive midfielder.
After the departure of Diaby and with Flamini set to follow, Arsenal are in desperate need of a defensive midfielder and the Sevilla star has been one of the best in his position since last season.
It is believed that Krychowiak and Benzema were the main targets for Arsene Wenger this summer and after Benzema’s public revelation that the player will stay at Real Madrid, Krychowiak has done the same.
The Sevilla midfielder tweeted out that he will continue at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium this season.

It will come as a bitter blow for Arsenal fans who were hoping for a central midfield signing this season.
After missing out on Morgan Schneiderlin to Manchester United, Krychowiak looked like a great fall back option.
With Coquelin the only natural defensive midfielder in the squad, Arsenal risk running out of options in case of a suspension/injury now.
Although it is reported that Arsenal are closing in on a striker, in the form of Kokorin, Wenger will need to add to his midfield if he wants to mount a serious title challenge this season.
