Arsenal have suffered a massive blow after their record summer signing Mesut Ozil will be out of action for the rest of the calendar year.
The midfielder, who arrived in Munich for the international duty with Germany underwent a MRI scan on Wednesday. The scan results confirmed the former Real Madrid star has damaged his joint. The injury will keep Ozil out of action for 10-12 weeks.
A statement on Germany’s official website read,” Mesut Özil has been ruled out of the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Poland in Warsaw and Ireland in Gelsenkirchen .”
“The Arsenal attacker will also have to sit out the final two international fixtures of the year – Germany face Gibraltar in a European Championship qualifier in Nuremberg before a friendly against Spain in Vigo on 18th November.”
“The 25-year-old complained about discomfort in his knee on Tuesday when he arrived in Frankfurt. Having been examined by team doctor Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt today in Munich, it was discovered that he has a partial lateral collateral ligament tear in his left knee. Mesut Özil is expected to be out for ten to twelve weeks,” it added.
The German international joins Olivier Giroud and summer signing and Mathieu Debuchy as the players who will be on the sidelines for a longer spell. Meanwhile, Theo Walcott is likely to return to action in the coming weeks, while Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta are also on the treatment table at Arsenal.
With crucial fixtures coming ahead in the Premier League and the Champions League, Arsene Wenger needs to regroup his squad in order to qualify for the next round of the Europe’s elite competition. At the same time the Gunners should also focus on the challenging for the title.
However, with Chelsea’s recent from and Manchester City’s financial muscle, Arsenal’s priority this season would be to retain the FA Cup and finish in top four.
