Wojciech Szczesny has revealed he feared for his place in the Gunners’ starting lineup when David Marshall was linked to Arsenal.
The 29-year-old was one of the very few standout players for Cardiff City in their disappointing campaign last season. Their poor form saw the Scottish international rumoured to leave the Welsh club, with the North London side being his next possible destination.
However, Arsene Wenger did not land Marshall and signed Colombian international David Ospina in the summer transfer window.
“He was one of the best keepers in the Premiership last season and I was worried he would take my place if he joined us. It was that simple,” Szczesny explained.
“I heard rumours he was going to sign for Arsenal and I don’t mind admitting I definitely wasn’t looking forward to that happening.”
Despite the arrival of Ospina, the Polish international has managed to keep his place in the Gunners’ starting lineup. Szczesny has started in all seven Premier League games this season and has managed just one clean sheet in the process.
Arsenal’s back four has been very weak, especially with injuries and Wenger’s error of not bringing in a replacement for Thomas Thomas Vermaelen, who made a switch to Barcelona.
However, the Frencman could still make a move for Marshall if he believes Szczesny’s services are no longer required at the Emirates. That is something which looks very unlikely as the Gunners will be looking to strengthen their back four and defensive midfield position.
Szczesny’s performance will not be taken into account due to the current injury crisis at the Emirates. However, the Polish stopper needs to step-up his performance when all the key injured players return to full fitness.
