There is no doubt that Arsenal are in dire need of a central defensive midfielder in the upcoming January Transfer window. Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho was a summer target for the Gunners but the Portuguese youngster stayed at the club despite intense speculations.
Despite having reported release clause of €45m, the London club will reluctant to pay that price and had offered €16m plus Joel Campbell on loan for the midfielder. But the bid was rejected as expected.
yesterday’s reports from the Independent however claim that Arsenal are plotting a £20m move for Carvalho in January. It is believed that Sporting have been forced to reduce their asking price for the 22-year-old after their elimination from the group stages of the Champions League. The report also claims that a lack of top tier European football could see the clubs being involved in some serious negotiations for Carvalho.
The Gunners have also been linked with Sami Khedira but it now appears that the German won’t leave Real Madrid any time soon. Carvalho no doubt is a long term target but given Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta’s repeated mistakes, the Portuguese sensation would easily walking into the Gunners starting eleven and would easily fit the bill for the London side.
