Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed midfielder Mikel Arteta and striker Yaya Sanogo have picked up injuries during the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund.
The North London club were without the services of Olivier Giroud as the Emirates club did not include the French international in the Champions League squad due to his injury. Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck was sidelined with an injury, forcing Wenger to start his compatriot against the Bundesliga outfit.
Sanogo netted his first Champions League goal in the second minute before summer signing Alexis Sanchez doubled the lead in the second half. However, the striker was replaced in the final quarter of the game.
Before him, Arteta was forced to leave the pitch and Wenger also confirmed another midfielder Jack Wilshere is set for an appointment with a specialist on Thursday.
“The injury situation is a problem because we have many games and we lost two players tonight. The first one is Mikel Arteta who has another calf problem and that looks quite serious. We also lost Yaya Sanogo to a hamstring problem,” Wenger told the club’s official website.
“Wilshere sees a specialist tomorrow. We’ll know more tomorrow night. I don’t know, the specialist will decide that.”
Meanwhile, Wenger also had some kind words for Sanogo after he opened his account in the Europe’s elite club competition.
“I think Sanogo played well. I decided tonight to got a bit longer from the start and he protected the ball well and won many challenges. He’s a young boy but he he has presence, character and he’s naturally committed. He has a natural, aggressive attitude up front that is vital and very important,” Arsenal manager said.
