Arsenal badly need a striker in the summer. Many feel, failing to land a good striker in the summer as also in the winter was the main reason why Arsenal failed to sustain the title challenge till the end, despite leading the table till January.
The thing is, not only they need a striker, but a good one. And they might miss out on re-signing Mexican striker Carlos Vela.
The Mexican joined Arsenal in 2005, but he didn’t start playing for the Gunners before 2008-09, due to work permit reasons. He didn’t make a bright impression either and sold on loans on two occasions.
However, during his time in Spain, with Real Sociedad, he made a bright impression, where is market value has inflated to €30m. However, Arsenal can buy him back for just €4m only.
Vela, who scored 19 goals and bagged 12 assists this season, insisted that he does’t rule out the possibility of joining the Gunners. Last month, in an interview with Marca he said:
“One possibility is that of the €30 million transfer, but there are more options for me to see what to do. Arsenal can buy me back for €4m. Now I see things differently and will not close the door to Arsenal, or any England team. I think I’m ready to go to another country.”
Again, in another Exclusive interview with Spanish newspaper El Diario Vasco, he reiterated his desire to return back to Arsenal. He added:
“A club that sees that a player is performing well for three years and has the chance of having him back for just an extra million… (Arsenal received €3m for the 50% of Vela’s rights in 2012) If Arsenal wouldn’t pay that amount they wouldn’t be very intelligent.”
“If we put ourselves in their position we will do the same. Now, we have to analyse what can be done and how it can be done. And after putting everything in order, we will make a decision about my future; trying to choose the best way to be happy.”
“Arsenal gave me the opportunity to come to Europe when I was 17. I didn’t have as many opportunities as I expected and I had to try new chances. If I have to return to London, I will try to make things in a different way in order so that happened in the past won’t be repeated again.”
“Now I speak English. I know what I would find there and what I won’t, so I could handle my return in a different way. But today, I don’t know if I am going to return or not, we will see, it’s a matter of time,”
However, it seems like Arsenal are not too keen to resign him, for whatever reasons. May be, his return could hamper the progress of young Sanogo, we can only guess. Spanish newspaper Marca are reporting today that Atletico Madrid are keen to sign Vela, as they see him as a good replacement of Diego Costa, who is Chelsea bound.
The Rojiblancos have already lodged an initial offer of €10m and are serious in bringing him to Vicente Calderon in summer.
