It seems like Arsenal are determined to finalise a deal for Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka before Euro 2016 kicks off, but Borussia Monchengladbach are stalling on the deal as they look for a suitable replacement.
Xhaka has a contract at Gladbach till 2019 and Arsenal will have to pay a handsome transfer fee around €30-40m to force the German club into selling their prized asset.
According to reports from German publication RP (h/t Sport Witness) Gladbach have confirmed that they’ve received an offer for the 23-year-old Basel-born midfielder.
The report claims that although the club has yet to confirm the details of the offer, it is perceived that the offer came from Arsenal. It is probably a matter of time now before Xhaka completes his move to North London.
The Gunners have been busy laying the foundation already, with recent reports suggesting the player has already agreed to personal terms with the London club.
A host of Premier League clubs including the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City have had shown an interest in the midfielder in recent months but the player prefers a move to Emirates Stadium this summer instead.
Most importantly, Xhaka wants the deal to be completed before Euro 2016 so that he gets ample time to focus on the tournament ahead and not worry about the future.
Arsenal’s chief transfer negotiator Dick Law has offered Xhaka an attractive pay package which the midfielder is likely to accept. The problem remains with Gladbach who are stalling on the deal, as they want to sign a replacement for their star midfielder before selling him to the Gunners.
Xhaka is a terrific player who could become a complete midfielder in the future. He is an effective ball winner and has a long passing range as well. The best part of his game is his versatility and he is a considerable threat at set-pieces too.
