Manchester United’s record transfer signing Angel di Maria’s future is in doubt after manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he is not certain the Argentine winger wants to stay at the club.
The Dutchman hopes Di Maria, who reportedly earns £280k-per-week wages, will continue at Old Trafford but at the same time admits he may consider selling him if the former Real Madrid winger asks to leave.
Di Maria didn’t enjoy a great season (as per his standards, although he managed 10 assists in the league) and has also experienced a troubled time off the pitch (attempted burglary on his rented property while he and his family were inside) which could prompt him to move elsewhere.
“The manager and the club is always dependable on the opinion of the player himself,” said Van Gaal on Di Maria’s future. “The player decides; we shall see what he decides.
“He cannot say that he has had a marvellous season here. The decision is not only to him because now we have a contract, so we shall speak always with every player, evaluation, as I always do. Then we speak with each other about the future, and that is with every player.”
Recent reports suggest that Ligue 1 giants PSG are keen to sign Di Maria and could make a formal move in the summer. United in that situation could sell him at a high price (presumably over £45m) and reinvest the money in the squad.
If the reports from The Telegraph are to be believed, Van Gaal has been given a transfer war chest to sign Real Madrid’s winger Gareth Bale, who would cost around £100m. United could recoup a chunk of his transfer fee by selling Di Maria, in case the Argentine decides to leave the club.
