Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss the Euro 2016 competition in France after sustaining a new knee injury in training.
Ahead of Arsenal’s crunch Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday, Arsene Wenger has revealed that the England international has picked up a new knee injury which will force him out of action for at least six to eight weeks.
The 22-year-old joined Arsenal in 2011 and has made 100 league appearances for the Gunners. However, the England winger hasn’t quite fulfilled his true potential, with his progress at the North London club being marred by frequent injuries.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has started in only nine games for Arsenal in the Premier League in 2015/16 and his future has come under intense speculation this season, with Liverpool and Manchester City thought to have been interested in signing him.
“It’s very sad, because he was quite ready physically, and sharp in training,” Wenger said on Friday at his news conference.
The former Southampton player picked up a knee injury during Arsenal’s Champions League clash against Barcelona in February. He recently returned to training with the rest of the squad, while Wenger had been planning to use him for the under-21s on Tuesday before sustaining his injury.
Arsenal will also miss the services of Per Mertesacker for the reminder of the season, after the German picked up an hamstring injury against Norwich.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is thought to be an admirer of Chamberlain’s talent, however, keeping in mind the youngster’s recent injury records, the Reds would be strongly advised to not take a gamble on the Arsenal winger.
Meanwhile, Arsenal can secure a top four place should they win against Manchester City at the Etihad. The Gunners are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games, and will be hoping to take advantage of City’s midweek Champions League exploits at the hands of Real Madrid.
