For the best part of last month and earlier this month, Portugal press were absolutely convinced that Benfica forward Nicolas Gaitan will move to Manchester United in the summer. Nothing new in it, as Gaitan has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for years and the rumours have turned into a joke now.
It started with a conviction that Manchester United will sign Gaitan. Even A Bola had a front page Done Deal story, where Premier League club Chelsea were also linked (no idea why?) Few days later, it was back to mere speculation, where the deal would go through if and only Angel di Maria would leave Manchester United.
Gaitan revealed his desire to stay at the club during the Copa America preparations, but it wasn’t convincing enough for newspapers like O Jogo to put a break on the rumour mill. And then all of a sudden, the rumour stopped for a while. It usually happens when there is hardly any substance to the story.
In the meantime, Manchester United are preparing life without David de Gea, plotting a move for Sergio Ramos, and Catalan press going insane with their claims of Angel di Maria and Barcelona transfer talks.
Amidst all these hype, Gaitan’s agent, José Irribarran, found the time is ripe to add fuel to the fire. He said as quoted by A Bola: “Everything is possible. There’s a negotiation pending with Manchester United. The player wants everything to go as smoothly as possible, We’re waiting for an answer from the vice-president. I can’t really say anything else.”
It is clearly evident that Gaitan’s agent is pushing for a move. Benfica are actively trying to sell Gaitan to Manchester United, however, it is still unclear whether United are at all interested in him.
