Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen has cooled down the recent rumours linking him with a shock move to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

The Belgium international played under Louis van Gaal, while the two were at Ajax. The Holland manager will take in charge of the Old Trafford role after the World Cup campaign with his national team and the Dutchman reportedly wanted United to sign Vermaelen.

The Independent claimed Vermaelen had verbally agreed a deal in joining the Red Devils for a fee of £10m in the upcoming transfer window. The 28-year-old has one year left on his contract at the Emirates and revealed United speculations are not true.

“I know there has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours but the only thing I can say is that it’s not true.  Everybody understands my situation at Arsenal and that I have one year left,” Vermaelen told Sky Sports.

“I understand that people are going to talk but I am here in Brazil and I am enjoying my time and I’m focused on what I am doing.”

Meanwhile, Vermaelen refused to reveal whether his future lies at Arsenal or away from the club. He admitted that he has held talks with the Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, but refused to reveal the details.

“We talk a lot when I am at Arsenal but it’s not what I am going to discuss here, it is something you are going to have to ask him,” Arsenal skipper added.

United need to strengthen their central defending position after they lost Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on a free transfer. The due were rock solid in the Red Devils’ heart of the defence in the past few years and replacing the two will be a huge task for the club’s chief executive Ed Woodward.
