VFL Wolfsburg v Manchester United
Uefa Champions League
Tuesday, 8 December 2009
Kickoff: 20:45 CET
Manchester United have already qualified for the second round, and need just a point to guarantee top spot in the group. A point is the least of their worries though, as the team’s defences have been savagely cut down by injuries and only Patrice Evra remains fit as United first choice AND second choice back four have stayed back in Manchester.
What’s more, at least 3 of those 8 players are out till next year, and another three won’t be fit for the weekend, leaving Ferguson and the United medical team anxiously hoping that a) Vidic and Brown recover for Saturday and b) Evra, Carrick and Fletcher don’t pick up any injuries in Germany tonight. If they do, there’s precious little cover in the walking wounded that is the remaining United squad.
United’s troubles are Wolfsburg’s chance to win the group and qualify for the second round – they have a better head to head record against CSKA Moscow and depending on the margin of their win (if it happens), they could not only qualify but also pip United for the top spot in the group.
Edin Dzeko has been the target of transfer speculation from Premier League teams (notably Manchester United) but the striker would be cup-tied for Europe and not an attractive proposition for this January at least. He has been pursued by Italian sides over the summer and is likely to make a move to the Serie A next summer. Tonight though, Dzeko will be leading the front line for Wolfsburg hoping that he can help his team win by a two-goal margin.
