Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has revealed that Arsenal target David Villa won’t be sold in January.
Arsenal were reportedly lining up a move for Barcelona forward David Villa this month as they look to strengthen their squad in order to push for the Champions League qualification spot this season. The Spanish striker, who is eager to get some first team action, is said to be looking for a move away from the Catalan club.
David Villa has been largely ignored by Tito Villanova this season and has spent more time on the bench than on the pitch. This lead to speculations regarding the striker’s future at the club and Gunners were looking to cash in on the situation.
Arsene Wenger has been an admirer of the 31-year-old striker from his Valencia days and would have pounced at any opportunity of signing him.
But Barcelona president has revealed in a recent statement that the Catalan club will not sell the striker in mid-season. Although he didn’t rule out letting go of Villa at the end of this season. Rosell was quoted in press:
“I completely rule out the transfer of Villa during the winter market.
“He is ours and we need him, there is a lot of the season left.”
If any deal for David Villa fails to materialize Arsenal are expected to look elsewhere, but Arsene Wenger has downplayed chances of Arsenal going on a spending spree this winter. Wenger said:
“We are on the market and if we find the right players, we will do something.”
By now, this line/phrase of Wenger must be very familiar with the Gooners around the world. It almost gives a sense of déjà vu to the fans, who would have expected a far more active winter transfer window.
Arsenal have been linked with Atletico Madrid striker Adrian Lopez, Argentine defensive midfielder Lucas Biglia and Rennes’ Yann M’vila. But perhaps the most important signing that the fans and Wenger is waiting for is that of Theo Walcott.
The England international is yet to extend his contract and if he secures his future at the club, then Arsene Wenger might think twice before signing another striker as Walcott has been lately deployed in that role. So indirectly, Walcott’s decision might have an affect on Arsenal’s transfer activity this month.
