Arsene Wenger feels that his side did reasonably well in their Champions League defeat to Barcelona, and the Gunners are looking to carry forward the positivity when they face Everton on Saturday in the Premier League.
The Frenchman has urged his team to continue to play with “the same passion and pride” and says the game holds a “huge importance” in the context of the title race.
“We know the huge importance this game has to us. We have to not over think. We just have to go out and perform,” said Wenger as quoted by the Mirror.
Arsenal are have won just once in their last seven games, losing five of them, and Wenger says another negative result would be catastrophe for the side.
“A negative result would be very bad for us so we hope for a positive result. The time is now to produce the result we want.”
The Gunners are missing Mathieu Flamini for this game with a hamstring injury. Apart from that, Wenger has the full squad to chose from.
Wenger reflected on other injury issues, adding that Cazorla’s recovery has been slow, but Jack Wilshere has been showing good signs of recovery. Petr Cech and Aaron Ramsey are expected to return after the international break.
Wenger pointed out Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, who is a reported £65m target for Manchester United, as a possible threat for his side on Saturday.
The Belgian has been in superb form this season, and Wenger praised him highly saying “his finishing is better, his technique is better. He has better numbers.”
Furthermore, Wenger adds that he was interested in signing the Belgian striker before he moved to Chelsea.
“Yes, we knew him in Belgium but at the time he opted to go to Chelsea. He is developing every year.
PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been linked with a move to Arsenal recently, but Wenger has rubbished such rumours, saying the Gunners are not looking to sign him at the moment.
“At the moment no we are not on that case. Where we are at the moment is short term. We are not on Zlatan’s case.
“At the moment my priority is not to go in the transfer market about possible signings. We are not at the moment thinking of signing anybody.”
Arsenal will start the game on Saturday, sitting 3rd in the table, 11 points behind Leicester with a game in hand, but Wenger believes the title race is far from over.
Wenger believes in football, things can change quickly. It can change quickly, but for that to happen so, Arsenal need to improve the recent performances and get the desired results.
