Arsenal are reportedly considering a move for the Anderlecht midfielder, Lucas Biglia, in the January transfer window.
Lucas Biglia has been linked with Arsenal for almost two seasons now. The midfielder has recently stated his desire to leave the Belgian Pro League club this month and that he is eyeing a move to the Serie A.
Biglia was quoted back then:
“I want to leave Anderlecht in January.
“I know there was contact with a German agent but let’s see. My dream is to play in Italy as I have Italian origins.
“It could be a platform and then maybe I’d go to a team that I really like, such as Inter or AC Milan.
My idol is Andrea Pirlo.”
Fiorentina have scouted the midfielder along with Arsenal for a long time, while there are interests from Spanish sides Malaga and Espanyol as well. But now it is believed that Arsene Wenger is considering a move for the Argentine international, a player he has admired for a long time.
Last season, it was reported that Biglia’s agent, who was desperate to secure a move, offered the 26-year-old to the Gunners. In fact Biglia himself confirmed Arsenal and Real Madrid’s interest in signing him, but any deal failed to materialize.
Arsene Wenger has already stated his desire to strengthen his squad in this transfer window as the Gunners push for the all important 4th place in the Premier League. It is believed that a striker and a midfielder is on Wenger’s priority list. While Arsenal are reportedly closing in on David Villa, Biglia could be a perfect addition to the squad.
Arsenal’s lack of a proper ball winner in the midfield is something that has been exposed far too often since the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona. Although Mikel Arteta has done a fantastic job in his new role, the Gunners do need a proper defensive midfielder to support Arteta and this is where Biglia fits the bill perfectly.
The defensive midfielder, who has made seven appearances for his national team so far, is highly rated in Belgium. He rose to prominence since winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup with Argentina in 2005.
Anderlecht is said to value Biglia at €11 million, which should come down considering Biglia’s willingness to leave. At this price his signing could prove to be a shrewd piece to business by Wenger.
