Excerpts from today’s World Cup Podcast, with Adrian Clarke and Iain Spragg:
Adrian Clarke: …One team that has no need to worry is Uruguay, through to the last 16 where they face South Korea. Group winners what you make of them, are they genuine contenders?
Iain Spragg: Probably not, it’s a bit too early to get too excited. Credit to them, very good qualification but now with the benefit of hindsight when you reflect on that group, you look at Mexico, you look at France and South Africa. Obviously France woeful, we’ll come back to them in a minute. South Africa enthusiastic but out of their depth. Mexico a decent side. So Uruguay have done well but whether it is a common thing after that well… I think it’s a bit too early.
A: Yeah I’m with you. I think defensively I’ve got to say top marks Godin and Lugano in the back in particular.
S: Lugano looks like very tidy player.
A: Yeah I know he plays in Spanish football and I’ve seen him before and he’s looked alright but he certainly stepped up to the plate in this tournament. And you know a good defense gets you a long way in the World Cups even against the best teams. They can take games to penalty shoot-outs and you know –win.
S: But they are also looks like teams in the competition like Brazil or Argentina particularly that it doesn’t matter how airtight your defense is they’re going to score goals against you. But Uruguay came alright in the other end of the scoring but we shall see. They were a good team to watch as well.
A: Yeah strong down the middle. Diego Perez in the midfield and in the front Edinson Cavani, Suarez and Forlan.
S: Suarez has been really lively, really busy about the ball with a lot of talent on the ball as well, great player to watch.
