Australia 1-1 Ghana
2010 FIFA World Cup
19 June 2010
It was a back and forth match as Australia started off strong but in the end would have to hold off Ghana because of a red card.
The Socceroos had a much better start from their opening match against Germany as they would score in the 11th minute. A free kick for Australia was sent in on goal, bobbled by the Ghana goalkeeper, and then put in the back of the net by Brett Holman. It was not great goalkeeper but credit should go to Holman for being in position and reacting faster than the defense.
At this point the match had started perfectly for Australia but it would take a turn for the worse in the 24th minute. Harry Kewell picked up a red card as he stopped a goal but did so by using his arm and was called for a hand ball. It was then a penalty for Ghana which was converted by Asamoah Gyan in the 25th minute.
Australia would find a way to hang on for the rest of the match and still have a shot to advance to the next round. They will need a win over Serbia and either Ghana beating Germany or make up a large deficit in goal difference.
