The Messiah’s century of goals for Barcelona

In the 2004/2005 season we saw a little kid showing some extravagant talent when he first played Barcelona B team. After just five games, he was promoted to the first team and since then that little kid has grown up to be, arguably, the biggest threat to any defense.

Lionel Andres Messi was born to a half Italian couple in Rosario, Argentina. He started his football career from a local club Grandoli at the age of five. In 1995, he switched to Newell’s Old Boys in his hometown. Three years later, when he was 11, he was discovered with a growth hormone deficiency. Primera Division club River Plate showed interest in the little boy but they did not have the money to pay for his treatment.

Messi’s relatives in Catalonia made Barcelona aware of the talent in the little boy and his father was able to arrange a trial. After watching the kid play, Barca offered to pay the medical bills if the family moves to Spain. The family agreed and Messi joined the youth academy.

Messi groomed well under the training of the Barca youth academy and then later under the former coach Frank Rijkaard. In Messi’s first performance at the Nou Camp, his composure on the ball and the passing combination between him and Ronaldinho earned him the standing ovation from the fans upon his substitution.

With the start of every season since, it seems that Messi is going to outplay himself from the previous season and he did just that. From repeating Maradona’s Goal of the Century and Hand of God and scoring the first hat-trick in the El Clasico since 1994/1995 to scoring five goals in a week to take Barca to the top of the table. From staying injured for six weeks and still being considered a Ballon d’Or nominee to scoring a header from between two of the best defenders from England to seal the Champions Trophy.

Finally, in the 2009/2010 season Messi scored his 100th goal for the club in the 4-0 victory over Sevilla on 17th January, 2010. He became the youngest player to score a century of goals for Barcelona. To celebrate his achievement, he scored another.
