With only four games left to go, Manchester United are fearing the worst – skipper Wayne Rooney’s season could be over due to ligament injury.
Rooney limped off at the end of United’s humiliating 3-0 defeat by Everton last Sunday and it appears now it was a serious knee problem.
Louis van Gaal said at the time United skipper would need a scan to determine the extent of the injury, now The Mirror reports he could miss the rest of the season.
The England skipper has tweaked his ligaments which would need at least a month of recovery period. In that case, he would likely to miss the end of the campaign.
Rooney has been ever-present for United this season and his absence is a huge blow to the side. United have played some attractive football when he started as a lone forward but did an equally commendable job while playing in midfield.
In his absence, Radamel Falcao will likely to get another chance to improve his goal tally. The Colombian striker, who joined on loan from Monaco, has cut a frustrating figure and only scored four league goals all season.
Robin van Persie scored twice while playing for the Manchester United U-21 side (mainly to regain his fitness) and the Dutch striker could be recalled into the starting line up.
United, currently occupying the fourth position, maintain a healthy seven point lead over Liverpool who lost 1-0 to Hull City at the KC stadium on Tuesday.
