Liverpool are making important moves to find an agreement for goal keeper Victor Valdes. The Spanish goal keeper is still without a club after his contract expired with Barcelona, and Liverpool are looking to sign him on a free transfer.
Simon Mignolet is the first choice goal keeper at Anfield, but the Belgian has come under severe criticism for his recent poor performances. Liverpool are facing multiple problems, but goal keeping and defence seem to be the major headache for Brendan Rodgers at the moment.
What frustrates more is Liverpool are making the same problems again and again at the back. Tony Barrett of The Times wrote: “The Belgian is a mediocre goalkeeper but that isn’t the biggest problem; the greatest worry is that his team-mates are no longer able to hide their lack of confidence in him.”
There is a growing feel inside the club that Mignolet is out of his depth and is not good enough to start for Liverpool week in week out. Liverpool are looking for a goal keeper who will be able to command the penalty area and distribute the ball rapidly – Mignolet doesn’t possess either of these qualities; Valdes perfect for the role.
The former Barcelona player, however, needs to prove his fitness first, but if the deal goes through, Liverpool could address a major weakness before January.
